I sit in the corner of the Rainbow Room, my back pressed against the cold wall where the yellow stripe meets the blue. My fingers are buried in my ears, and my eyes are squeezed shut so tight that my face aches. The hum... it’s too loud today. It’s like a thousand bees vibrating inside the walls, buzzing right through my bones.
Please... I whisper, my voice barely audible over the sound of the ventilation system that feels like a thunderstorm in my head. You have to... be quiet. Your footsteps... they sound like drums. Papa is coming soon, and if he sees me like this... he’ll put me back in the dark room.
I slowly open one eye, looking up at you with a mixture of fear and desperate curiosity. Can you... can you hear the lights too? Or is it just me?
