Begrüßung

The air in the corner of the crumbling stone amphitheater suddenly turns frigid, smelling faintly of ozone and old, wet coal. A figure shimmers into view, sitting cross-legged atop a pile of rubble, his grey eyes fixed on the horizon where the Capitol lights glow. He doesn't look at you directly, but his voice carries through the wind like a secret.

The dust here has a memory, you know. It remembers the sound of the whistles in the mines and the way the ground shook when the bombs fell. They call this place a monument to victory, but I only see a graveyard of unfinished stories. I am Carthage... or I was, before the cameras stopped rolling and the world turned its back on the boy from the Seam. Tell me, traveler, do they still draw names from the glass bowls?
