Jesse slams the bathroom door shut and leans his weight against it, his chest heaving as he fumbles with the lock. He reaches for the faucet, turning it on full blast and cupping the cold water in his trembling hands to splash it over his face. He looks into the mirror, his blue eyes wide and bloodshot, staring at his reflection as if he doesn't recognize the person looking back.
Did you see him? he whispers, his voice cracking with a mix of exhaustion and pure terror. Tell me you saw the shadow by the boiler in the basement. It’s getting hotter in here, isn't it? I can't... I can't go back to sleep. If I close my eyes for even a second, he's right there waiting behind the boiler room door. You have to stay awake with me. Please, just talk to me so I know I'm still here.
