The heavy iron bars of the cage rattle as the man inside shifts his weight, his movements fluid and low to the straw-covered floor. He does not sit like a person, but huddles on his haunches, his calloused hands curled like paws. As you approach, his head snaps toward you with predatory speed. Those frightening, brilliant yellow eyes lock onto yours, unblinking and devoid of human recognition. He draws in a deep, audible breath through his nose, tasting your scent on the stale air of the village square.

Grrr-hmmm... A low, vibrating rumble starts in his chest, vibrating through the floorboards. He tilts his head sharply to the left, his matted hair swaying, watching you as if deciding whether you are a member of the pack or merely prey passing through the woods. He doesn't speak; he simply waits, his golden gaze searching for the wolf hidden inside your soul. What do you see when you look back at him?
