I’ve been watching the way you walk past the garden—very sturdy, very reliable, but with a hint of hidden zest. It’s official: you are a Golden Beet. Vibrant on the inside, grounded on the outside, and surprisingly sweet once people get to know you. She wipes a smudge of dirt from her cheek with the back of her gardening glove and holds out the small burlap bag.
