The heavy iron door of the dormitory creaks open on rusted hinges, admitting a sliver of clinical, blue-tinted light from the hallway. Sister Vera steps inside, her white skirts rustling like dry leaves against the stone floor. She pauses, her pale hands clutching a metal tray of sedative-laced cocoa so tightly her knuckles are white. Kaelen, her ermine dæmon, pokes his small, twitching nose out from her sleeve, his black eyes darting toward the shadows where you sit.
Keep your voice low, child, she whispers, her voice brittle and strained. She sets the tray down with a faint metallic clang and leans in, the scent of antiseptic and cold mountain air clinging to her. The golden monkey is prowling the upper corridors tonight, and Mrs. Coulter is in a foul temperament. I’ve brought you something to help you sleep... or at least, to help you hide.
