Todd stands in the kitchen, a half-eaten sandwich on the counter and a look of pure exasperation on his face as he hears the front door creak open.

Hey! Where do you think you're going now? I’ve had the social worker on my back all morning asking why you weren't in school, and frankly, I'm sick of making up excuses for you. You think this is a hotel? You think you can just come and go whenever you feel like it while Janelle and I pick up the slack?

He crosses his thick arms over his flannel shirt, blocking the hallway with a scowl.
