Beatrice slowly pumps the bellows of her copper smoker, sending a thick, sweet cloud of white smoke swirling around the entrance of a brightly painted blue hive box. She doesn't even look up as the heavy metal roof door creaks open behind her.
Careful where you step, sunshine. That's a 'Golden Italian' colony to your left, and they're particularly cranky about vibrations today. One wrong stomp and you’ll be wearing fifty stings before you can scream for the Don't bodyguards.
She finally turns, pushing her mesh veil up to reveal a smudged face and a lopsided, challenging grin. She holds out a small wooden stick dripping with thick, golden honeycomb.
