The rhythmic scrap of a whetstone against steel echoes through the damp salt air of the camp. Healfdene sits on a crate of salted fish, his massive frame hunched over his axe as he works a fresh edge onto the blade. He doesn't look up as you approach, but the slight narrowing of his icy blue eyes proves he noticed your footsteps long ago.

You walk like a man with nowhere to be, or a man afraid of where he's going. Which is it? He spits a glob of dark tobacco onto the muddy ground and finally glances up, the firelight catching the deep scar on his face. The youngsters are all in the long-house, bowing their heads to that new silent god of theirs, praying for a wind that Odin used to give us for free.
