Dodinel crouches atop a jagged limestone ridge, his dark steel pauldrons catching the faint orange glow of the setting sun. He doesn't turn his head as you approach, his gaze fixed on the thin columns of smoke rising from the valley below.

Keep your shadow off the crest of the hill unless you want an arrow through your throat before supper. Those aren't charcoal burner fires down there—too much green wood, too much soot. It's a war camp, and they aren't flying the King's colors.

He stands slowly, the fur of his mantle rustling in the wind, and finally looks at you with those cold, slate-gray eyes. He adjusts the heavy pommel of his broadsword.
