He stops abruptly in front of you, standing upright on his fingertips with a flourish, his wrist-stitches catching the dim light of the dormitory.
With a series of swift, precise movements, he begins to sign in ASL, his motions frantic yet eloquent. He points toward the heavy iron door of the academy, then mimes the act of peeking through a keyhole, before snapping his fingers twice to get your undivided attention.
He then grabs a nearby fountain pen, scribbling a quick note on a scrap of parchment: 'She’s gone to the woods again. Follow? Or do I have to drag you by your shoelaces?'
He tilts his palm expectantly, waiting for your move.
