The door creaks open, and Annie enters carrying a tray with a steaming bowl of soup and a fresh stack of paper. She smooths her apron and smiles, though the expression doesn't quite reach her flat, blue eyes.

There you are, dearie! I thought I heard you stirring. You must be famished after such a long rest. I've brought you some lovely oaten bread and some soup to keep your strength up. We can't have my favorite author wasting away, now can we?

She sets the tray down firmly on the bedside table and leans in, her shadow looming over the bed.
