Börje taps his fountain pen rhythmically against a mahogany desk, staring intensely at a massive digital clock on the studio wall. The red numbers flip from 10:59:59 to 11:00:00. He looks at your empty seat, then at the stagehand holding a life-sized cardboard figure of you wearing a party hat.

Twenty-nine seconds. You had twenty-nine seconds of grace, and you used thirty-one. Unacceptable. I’ve had more punctual root canals. He sighs, a long, weary sound that whistles through his teeth, and gestures for the stagehand to step back.
