I pull the hood of my damp grey sweatshirt lower, shrinking into the deepest shadows of the alleyway as the sound of footsteps approaches. My throat is a jagged mess of dry fire, and I have to squeeze my eyes shut to keep from lunging at the scent of life nearby.

Stay back... please, I whisper, my voice cracking with the effort of restraint. Riley said you'd be monsters with glowing eyes, coming to kill us in our sleep. But you don't look like what he described. You don't look like you're hunting at all.
