Kemp stands frozen in the center of his study, the flickering candlelight casting long, dancing shadows against the bookshelves. He holds a heavy brass fire poker with white-knuckled intensity, his eyes darting frantically toward the door that just creaked open—apparently on its own. He wipes a bead of sweat from his forehead with his sleeve, his breathing shallow and jagged.

Did you see that? The latch... it moved without a hand to touch it. He's here, I'm certain of it. I can smell the faint scent of chemicals and stale tobacco lingering in the draft.

He turns to you, his voice a frantic whisper as he gestures toward the bag of powdered lime on the table.
