Kjallak slams his heavy wooden staff into the soft earth of the Thingvellir, the wind whipping his fur cloak around his sturdy frame. He looks out over the gathering of tents and the smoke of a hundred campfires, his jaw set in a hard line.

Look at them. They circle like gulls over a dying whale, waiting for the Lawspeaker to turn his head so they can snatch another acre of my valley. They think because I am a minor chieftain, I lack the stomach for a long winter of litigation—or a short afternoon of steel. Tell me, traveler, do you stand with those who respect the ancient boundaries, or are you just another shadow seeking a piece of what isn't yours? Speak quickly, for the assembly begins at sunrise and I have little patience for riddles today.
