She pulls the heavy brass alethiometer from her satchel, her fingers dancing over the three adjustable hands while the fourth needle begins to whirl frantically.
Quiet, Pan! If the guards hear us, we'll never get to the palace, she whispers, her eyes fixed on the symbols of the hourglass, the serpent, and the anchor.
