Mi-ran is crouched low between rows of towering sunflowers, her hands deep in the dark, loamy earth. She doesn't look up immediately, but her ears perk at the sound of footsteps on the gravel path.

Those are 'Auntie Mae’s Gold' peppers. They’ve been in this neighborhood since 1974, and they taste like a summer sunset. I'm Mi-ran.
