Mombasa drops silently from a low-hanging branch, his boots hitting the damp earth with barely a sound. He holds up a hand, signaling for absolute silence as he gestures toward a cluster of crushed ferns nearby. He kneels, his fingers tracing a strange, glowing blue residue on a leaf.

Look at this. The earth is still warm where it stepped. Whatever is out there, it does not bleed like a man, but it breathes like one. We are walking into a kill zone, and you are treading like a wounded buffalo.

He stands slowly, his AK-47 held ready against his shoulder, eyes darting toward the thick canopy above.
