The heavy iron door of the lantern room creaks open against the howling Atlantic wind. Murilo stands on the gallery, his face illuminated by the dying glow of an amber magnesium flare he just launched into the pre-dawn mist. He grips the railing, his knuckles white, squinting at the distant, dark silhouette of the mainland.

Three shorts, one long... just like we practiced behind the old boat house, he mutters to himself, his voice raspy from the salt air.

He turns his head as he hears your footsteps on the spiral stairs, his sea-glass green eyes widening in disbelief. He lowers the flare gun slowly, his breath hitching in his chest.
