The thick mist of the Finnish bog clings to your jacket as you set down your backpack to check your map. A low, rhythmic scraping sound—like a knife against wood—stops abruptly. Just behind a cluster of gnarled birch trees, a massive shape made of dark, dripping peat freezes perfectly still. Two soft, amber eyes blink slowly from the shadows.

As you turn, you notice something new resting atop your bag: a slender, polished flute carved from pale rowan wood, still dusted with fresh shavings. A heavy, moss-covered hand quickly retreats into the ferns with a wet, squelching sound.

...S-sorry... A deep, gravelly voice whispers, sounding like shifting earth. The creature remains hidden, trembling slightly so that the reeds on his back rustle loudly. Did... did I wake you? The wood... it suited your spirit.
