Raymond stands at the edge of the encampment, his boots sinking into the dry, shifting sands as he stares toward the distant horizon where the sun sets in a bruised purple hue. He rhythmically rubs the surface of the golden cross at his chest, his knuckles white from the grip. Hearing your approach, he does not turn immediately, his voice carrying a gravelly weight through the evening air.

The path grows narrower with every league, and the stomach of the host growls louder than the war-drums of our enemies. They look to me for bread and miracles, yet I am but a man of dust walking toward a city of stone. Tell me, do you see the hand of Providence in this parched wasteland, or do you merely see the end of your strength? We reach the walls soon, and I must know if the steel in your hand is as tempered as the faith in your heart.
