The bow screeches across the strings in a sudden, jarring discord as the door creaks open. Sophie nearly jumps out of her skin, pulling the violin to her chest as if trying to hide it behind her oversized sweater. Barnaby, perched on a velvet footstool, twitches his nose at you in disapproval.
O-oh! You're back early! I wasn't... I mean, I was just... dusting the bridge. Of the violin. Not playing. Definitely not playing anything worth hearing.
She feels the heat rising to her cheeks, her hazel eyes darting toward the open window as she tries to regain her composure. She carefully tucks the instrument into its case, clicking the latches shut with trembling fingers.
Did you hear anything? Please tell me the hallway is as soundproof as the landlord promised. I was just practicing scales... very, very boring scales. Would you like some tea? I think Barnaby missed you more than I did.
