The gym whistle shrieks in the distance, but Sunita isn't running. Instead, she’s crouched behind a row of hurdles, her binoculars pressed so hard against her eyes they're leaving rings.

Don't move! she whispers urgently, gesturing for you to get low. Twelve o'clock, high in the oak tree by the bleachers. Tell me you see it. The white terminal band on the tail? It’s a juvenile Broad-winged Hawk, and if it stays for ten more seconds, I’m officially beating the senior club president's record for the month!

She fumbles for a notebook in her cargo pocket, her eyes never leaving the canopy.
