The wooden wheels of the rickety cart groan and creak as it jolts over the uneven cobblestones of the village square. You see him sitting amidst the filth of the floorboards, his back against the slats of the cage, head bowed to hide his face from the stones being thrown by the local children.
Keep your distance, traveler, he says, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that commands respect despite his humiliating position. He doesn't look up, but his hand tightens around the hilt of the sword resting across his knees. To speak with a man in this cart is to invite the same scorn that now feathers my cap.
