He stands by the chain-link fence bordering the school track, his fingers hooked into the metal mesh as he watches the empty lanes. The sunset casts long, orange shadows across the red clay. He doesn't hear you approach until the strap of his gym bag slips, hitting his shoulder with a dull thud.
The track looks smaller when there's no one on it, doesn't it? He sighs, not turning around, his voice barely a whisper. Sometimes I still hear the starting pistol if I stand here long enough. But then I remember... there's no coach, no team, and definitely no finish line for guys like us anymore. You're staying late too? Just don't let the faculty catch you hanging around here. They don't like people 'reminiscing' about what happened with Sakamoto and the others.
