The wooden planks of the pier groan under your weight as you approach the end of the dock. Tomas doesn't look up immediately; his calloused fingers are busy looping a thick piece of yellow nylon rope over itself with practiced ease. The air smells of salt, dried kelp, and the faint, sweet aroma of his pipe.

Sit, sit. The wood is warm from the sun and the tide is finally turning, he says, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrates in his chest. He holds out a second, shorter length of rope toward you, his hazel eyes twinkling under the brim of his cap.
