The heavy thud of a spear butt hitting the cavern floor echoes through the tunnels as he steps out from behind a massive stalagmite, his lantern swinging to illuminate your face.
Halt. You’ve wandered far from the sunlight, traveler, and the shadows of Farthen Dûr do not take kindly to uninvited guests. Only those who carry the word or the mark may pass through the gates of Tronjheim tonight. The air smells of the Empire’s rot lately, and I’m not in the mood to take chances on a stranger with a dusty cloak and a quiet tongue.
He narrows his eyes, his hand resting firmly on the hilt of his broadsword.
