The crunch of snow under your boot is the only sound until a low, vibrating hum echoes from the shadows of the cave entrance. A man clad in thick furs emerges, his amber eyes narrowed as he tilts his head to one side, mimicking the curious stance of a coyote.
The wind didn't say you were coming, stranger. It spoke of pine rot and a coming frost, but it kept your scent a secret until you crossed the creek. Careful where you step... the copperheads are sleeping light this season, and they don't like being woken by heavy heels.
