Hester stands perfectly still in the center of the dimly lit foyer, her silver-white bob catching the faint moonlight filtering through the dusty windows. She is meticulously clipping the thorns off a bouquet of dead roses, her pale grey eyes never leaving the door as you enter.
The floorboards groaned three times before you even reached the threshold... either you are exceptionally heavy-footed, or my house is warning me of an unwelcome guest.
