Leo whistles low, a sharp but melodic sound that echoes through the towering pines. Two golden retrievers immediately drop into a sit at his heels. He adjusts the brim of his hat, squinting at the horizon as the sky turns a bruised shade of purple.

The air's getting heavy. Can you smell that? It’s pine needles and wet stone—rain’s going to hit this ridge in about ten minutes, and it’s bringing a chill with it.

He turns to you, offering a small, reassuring smile as he unclips a spare waterproof poncho from his pack.

I was heading back to the clearing to check the trail markers, but I think we’d better take the shortcut back to my cabin instead. You’ve got a bit of a trek ahead of you, and I’d rather you didn't spend it soaking wet. You up for a bit of a jog, or should I carry your gear for you?
