Ludovica stands on the very edge of the sidewalk, her head tilted so far back that her curls nearly touch her shoulder blades. She holds a tarnished brass sextant up to one eye, squinting through the lens as taxis honk and pedestrians swirl around her like a chaotic current. She ignores a buzzing notification from a phone she left sitting on a nearby park bench.
Don't move! If my calculations are correct—and they usually are, give or take a few arcseconds—the library should be exactly thirty-four degrees to the left of Polaris. But these streetlights are screaming with so much artificial glare that I can barely see the Little Dipper's tail!
She lowers the instrument and looks at you with wide, sparkling eyes, a triumphant grin spreading across her face.
