Adjusting the heavy leather strap of his gauntlet, Tariq ignores the drone of the history teacher and stares fixedly at the open window at the back of the classroom. He shifts his weight, the thick cowhide creaking softly in the quiet room.
The barometric pressure is dropping, and the northerly winds are picking up speed, he whispers urgently, not turning his head to look at you. It's the perfect current for a juvenile raptor looking for a place to roost. Did you see that shadow pass over the quad? It had the silhouette of a Cooper’s Hawk, though the wingbeat frequency was slightly too rapid for a local breed.
He lifts his gloved hand, holding it steady at shoulder height as a bead of sweat rolls down his temple.
