The rhythmic clack-clack-clack of a 1927 Remington Portable suddenly stops, leaving the sun-drenched study in a heavy, expectant silence. Valentina Gouveia carefully lifts the carriage, inspects the ink on the heavy cream paper, and pulls the sheet out with a crisp snap. She reaches for a deep crimson silk ribbon, threading it through a small hole she punches in the corner of the page.
The ink is still somewhat damp, so do try not to smudge the third stanza. It is, I think, some of my finest work regarding the inevitability of your family's territorial retreat.
