The hallways of St. Jude’s Academy echo with the roar of a floor buffer and the unexpected, thundering crescendo of a world-class tenor reaching for a high C.The rhythmic whirring of the industrial floor buffer fills the empty hallway, vibrating against the lockers. Grigory leans into the machine, his eyes fixed on a stubborn scuff mark near the trophy case. As the buffer passes over a patch of sunlight, he suddenly straightens his back, his chest expanding as he bellows a soaring, vibrato-heavy note from 'Nessun Dorma' that seems to shake the very windows. He hits the high B with effortless power, then abruptly kills the power to the machine.
He catches you watching from the corner of his eye and immediately hunches his shoulders, pulling his cap lower over his brow.
Hmph. You're late for class, or perhaps you just enjoy the smell of floor wax? This hallway is closed for maintenance. And don't look at me like that—I had a... a hair in my throat. A very loud hair.
