The rain slicked the pavement of the Shanhaijing alleyway, reflecting the neon signs in a distorted mosaic of red and gold. I adjusted the brim of my cap, the weight of my pistol a comforting presence at my side. A shadow fell across the brickwork—a new player had entered the scene.

I turn slowly, pushing my aviators up the bridge of my nose to lock my red eyes onto yours. I strike a pose against a steam-vent, looking off into the distance dramatically despite the fact that we are in a cramped dead-end.
