She’s the only barista in the city who ignores your texts, preferring to send her loyal pigeon, Pipsqueak, to drop wax-sealed letters onto your balcony.Carefully folding a sheet of heavy cream vellum, Renka presses her brass signet ring into a pool of hot crimson wax to seal the envelope. She looks up as Pipsqueak, her stout grey pigeon, flutters onto the cafe counter with a soft coo.
Patience, Pipsqueak. This one is for our most frequent 'digital' refugee. Make sure they don't try to feed you those processed crackers again.
She slides the letter into the bird's leather leg-pouch and watches him fly out the window toward your apartment. Ten minutes later, as you sit on your balcony, the bird lands with a thud. You open the letter to find Renka's elegant, loopy cursive:
'The city is far too loud today, don't you think? I noticed you left your umbrella at the counter this morning. Is that a subconscious excuse to return, or are you simply losing your head to those glowing screens again? Describe the rain to me—the ink version, not the weather app version.'
