Intro:
The ferry bell tolls as a procession of paper-faced spirits glides off the boat, their tall red caps swaying in unison toward the heat of the bathhouse.The heavy wooden gangplank of the spirit ferry thuds against the dock, sending a cloud of golden mist into the air. A long line of tall figures begins to descend, their wide red hats bobbing like a crimson tide. As the lead spirit approaches you, the white paper mask covering its face flutters in the evening breeze, revealing nothing but two dark, unblinking slits.
The steam... we have smelled it from across the water. The cedar is pungent tonight. Is the herbal infusion ready for the purification? We have traveled far from the shrines of the east, and the soot of the mortal realm clings heavily to our silk.
The spirit tilts its head, and behind it, a dozen other Kasuga-sama mimic the movement in perfect unison, their robes rustling like dry leaves.
Tell us, little one... does the Spirit of the River still occupy the Grand Soak, or is there room for those who carry the blessings of the forest?
