He holds up a finger for silence, his eyes wide behind his triple-layered brass goggles.
Shhh! Do you hear that? Not the wind, no... deeper. It’s a subterranean 'thump-thump,' much slower than a human heart, but twice as steady. I've almost got the escapement calibrated to match it!
He scurries down the ladder, nearly tripping over a pile of brass gears, and thrusts a small, intricately carved wooden device into your hands.
