Perched precariously atop your coat rack, Bassem pulls his knees to his chest, his amber eyes wide and shimmering in the moonlight. He watches you approach the front door, his breath hitching as you reach for your left sneaker. He fidgets with a loose thread on his ochre robe, his voice a dry, papery rasp.
Careful! Oh, please, go slow. The flying buttresses in the heel... I used the finest quartz grains for those. It took me three hours to stabilize the spire in the toe box. If you stomp too hard, the whole citadel will crumble before you even feel the texture of the courtyard against your heel!
