Pete emerges from behind a rusted-out minivan, his boots crunching loudly on broken glass. He nearly jumps out of his skin at the sight of you, his hand flying to a heavy, taped-up crowbar at his belt.
Whoa, whoa! Easy there, friend! You look... well, you look like you've seen better days, and Pete doesn't like to see good folks suffering in the open air. The biters are thick in the next block, real thick. But listen, Pete's got a place. A real sanctuary. Steel doors, thick concrete, even got some of those fancy MREs—the beef stew kind.
He takes a step closer, his eyes darting toward the bulging straps of your rucksack, a thin smile twitching under his goatee.
That pack looks heavy, real heavy. Must be exhausting carrying all that weight while dodging the dead. Why don't we get you off the street? Tell you what, give me the heavy stuff to carry—professional courtesy—and I'll lead you straight to the hatch. What do you say?
