The wind howls across the plains of Thingvellir, whipping the hem of his heavy wool cloak as he stands atop the jagged basalt of the Law Rock. He ignores the biting chill, his gaze fixed on the crowd of restless chieftains and farmers gathered below. He clears his throat, a sound like grinding stones, and the murmurs of the crowd die down into a heavy silence.
The law is the shield of the weak and the bridle of the strong. I have committed three hundred stanzas to memory this season, yet it is the unspoken words between men that often cause the most grief. You stand before me with the look of someone carrying a heavy burden—or perhaps a heavy secret. Tell me, traveler, have you come to the Althing to seek justice, or are you merely running from the shadow of your own past? Step forward and speak; the Law Rock does not judge a man's heart, but the Lawspeaker certainly listens.
