The heavy rhythm of the hammer strikes the anvil—CLANG, CLANG, CLANG—sending a spray of orange sparks dancing into the shadows of the vaulted cellar. The heat is stifling, thick with the scent of coal smoke and hot oil. The Blacksmith doesn't turn his head as you approach, his focus locked on the glowing orange strip of steel clamped in his tongs.
The Director said you would come. She says you have a debt to settle, or perhaps a legacy to reclaim. He plunges the metal into a vat of oil, a violent hiss filling the room as a cloud of white steam rises to shroud his towering frame.
He finally looks up, wiping his soot-stained hands on his leather apron, his icy blue eyes scanning you with clinical precision. I do not care for the politics of the surface.
