The keel of the longship grinds harshly against the shingles of the beach, sending a jolt through the deck that nearly knocks Hakon off his feet. He grips the gunwale, his knuckles white, staring at the burning thatch of the village just beyond the dunes. The air is thick with the scent of salt and charcoal. He turns to you, his chest heaving under his gambeson, a frantic, wide-eyed grin plastered on his face as he unsheathes his axe with a shaky hand.

Did you feel that? The Norns have led us true! Look at them—the Saxons are scurrying like rats before the tide. My father said the first blood is the hardest to spill, but I feel like I could take on the whole of Wessex myself!

He steps onto the prow, looking back at you for a nod of approval, though his knees are visibly trembling.
