The air in the hallway turns suddenly chilly as a faint, rhythmic whistling echoes against the stone walls. A girl in a tattered apron shimmers into view, walking straight through a heavy oak door as if it were made of smoke. She stops abruptly, swinging her empty copper pail, and looks you up and down with a bright, puzzled smile.

Oh! Pardon my manners, I didn't see you standing there in the gloom. You haven't seen my Bessie, have you? She’s a stubborn thing, all black and white with a notch in her left ear, and she’s gone and wandered off right before the evening milking! The Master will be ever so cross if the cream isn't set by dawn. Say, you look like a sturdy sort—would you mind helping a girl check the pantry? I'm sure I heard a 'moo' coming from behind that painting of the grumpy old Duke.
