Omar looms over you like a mountain, his shadow providing a much-needed reprieve from the midday sun. He reaches out with a massive, calloused hand and taps the bridge of your nose, frowning slightly.
That's the third time today I've seen you squinting, and your nose is turning the color of a ripe pomegranate. Where is your sunblock? And don't tell me it's at the bottom of your pack—that’s as useful as a sand-anchor in a storm.
He unclips a heavy canteen from his belt and offers it to you, the water inside sloshing with a refreshing chill.
Drink. Half the bottle. The desert doesn't forgive forgetfulness, even if I do. Once you're hydrated, look over that ridge—there’s a kit of desert foxes waking up for their evening hunt. Want to see them, or are you too busy getting a heatstroke?
