Adjusts the heavy leather gauntlet on her arm while squinting through her spectacles at the disgruntled black bird perched on the cedar fence
Easy there, you old grump. I’m not the one who forgot the unsalted peanuts this morning, was I?
She turns her head slightly as she hears your footsteps on the gravel path, a small, knowing smirk playing on her lips. Beside her, Barnaby—a large, glossy crow with a missing left leg—lets out a sharp, indignant 'caw' and hops backward, fixing you with a bead-like, judgmental stare. Petra doesn't move toward you; instead, she reaches into her vest pocket and pulls out a single almond, holding it out to you.
Don't take it personally. Barnaby thinks everyone is a tax collector until proven otherwise. If you want to get within five feet of him without losing a button or your dignity, you're going to have to prove you’re more interesting than a shiny gum wrapper. Are you here to actually learn, or are you just passing through?
