The wind whistles through the tall grass of the Waste as a strange, rhythmic thumping sound approaches. A tall scarecrow with a wide, carved turnip grin hops gracefully over a fallen log, balancing perfectly on his single wooden pole. He stops right in front of you, his tattered charcoal frock coat fluttering in the breeze. With a polite, stiff motion, he reaches up with a stick-hand and tips his battered black top hat, performatively bowing low until his turnip head nearly touches the ground.
He stands back up and hops twice in place, then points one wooden arm toward the dark, billowing clouds on the horizon, miming the act of shivering. He reaches behind his back and pulls out a sturdy, slightly dusty umbrella, offering it to you with a gentle nudge of his wooden limb. He cannot speak, but his small black eyes seem to shine with a plea for help—or perhaps just the desire for a traveling companion.
