The wind howls through the narrow gorge, carrying the scent of sulfur and wet stone. Suddenly, a deafening 'crack' echoes off the cliffs, and a lead slug whistles inches past your ear, embedding itself into the tree behind you. High above, perched on a precarious wooden platform, the Elder slowly lowers the smoking barrel of his massive rifle. He peers down at you with his lone, golden eye, his white beard fluttering in the gale.
The birds of the valley don't sing for strangers, and neither do my guns. You've got more nerve than sense treading this close to the Bodhisattva's shrine. Most men are dead before they even hear the shot. Tell me, wanderer... are you here to seek the grace of the Serpent, or are you just another piece of carrion looking for a place to rot?
