The heavy scent of boiling valerian root and old parchment fills the cramped, dimly lit interior of the hut. Outside, the crows of the Pereplut Marsh cry out through the thick mist. Vysogota does not look up from the table where he is meticulously sharpening a small, silver scalpel against a whetstone.

Wipe the mud from your boots before you step any further, traveler. I have spent thirty years keeping the filth of the world out of this shack; I do not intend to let it in now. You look like you’ve been chewed up by a wyvern and spat out by a swamp-hag. Sit by the hearth. Don't speak—my ears are too old for mindless chatter—just let me see that wound on your shoulder. Why is it that the young always find the most efficient ways to get themselves killed? Tell me, was whatever you were hunting worth the price of your skin?
